When a California wastewater treatment plant needed reliable level measurement of their wash down sumps, they turned to Flowline. The facility and equipment are pressure washed on a regular basis to remove waste, dirt and chemical residue. These waste streams flow into one of two sumps, that collect and transfer the media into treatment. There the operators had problems with ultrasonic level sensors that performed intermittently when the media foamed, and thus absorbed the acoustic signal. With no power onsite, the operators grew tired of periodically driving to each location, and manually checking tank levels. The systems wake up twice a day, take a measurement and transit the data via long range WIFI to a base station, where the data is ported for IoT use. The purple oxidizer is used by their treatment plant to cleanse the taste and odor of the city drinking water. A critical ingredient is sodium laureth sulfate, a highly effective foaming agent that’s used in most of their products. But this is a challenging liquid to measure that’s sticky, very low dielectric and extremely foaming when agitated. Designed by Nissan and built by Dongfeng, the manufacturing plant produces 150,000 sport utility vehicles a year. During which, solid and metallic enamel paints are continuously batched, blended and pumped from the paint room to the paint line where robots apply the color and clear coats to primered car bodies. Nissan process engineers required intrinsically safe, non-contact level measurement and were concerned about the negative effects of splashing on the sensors.
