Electronics

Solartron Metrology gauging probes and sensors are used today in a wide range of applications throughout the electronics industry. As electrical components become smaller and more intricate, the need to ensure specific measurements are adhered to, grows in importance, with quality control processes becoming fundamental and complex.

LCD screen gauging

Solartron Probes can be used to gauge LCD and Glass materials. Applications include checking for flatness or curvature of the surface. The Feather and Ultra Feather Touch have such a light tip force, that there is no marring to the surface.

Component case gauging

Solartron probes can be used to check the geometry of a cell phone casing or other formed part before assembly. Our 6mm diameter probes can also be used in tighter spaces, which is more important than ever as electronics become more compact.

Check LCD screen or glass thicknesst

Feather Touch probes can be used to precisely check the thickness of cell phone glass or LCD screens, as well as the thickness of a film layer on a pane. The low tip forces and available nylon tips will prevent any scratching or marring of the surface.

Hard disk vs Flexures

Solartron probes and sensors are used to check critical dimensions of Hard Disk Drive components. Here, Solartron Flexures are being used the check the perimeter of a casting. Using the Orbit® Network, all points can be checked simultaneously and fed into a PC for data tracking.

Hard disk vs DW10P

With an ultra-low tip force of 0.03N, Solartron Ultra Feather Touch probes are used instead of non-contact technologies for certain applications. Compared to a laser triangulation sensor, the UFT probes are more cost efficient, more compact, much easier to set up, and more accurate. Here, three Ultra Feather Touch probes are being used to check three points on a small, delicate Hard Disk Drive surface.

Non-contact mobile phone measurements

Ensuring measuring systems will not damage the product is of a high importance. Using one of Solartron's laser triangulation systems, there is no marring to the surface of target material, which can be an issue in the manufacture and testing of electronics.

Dynamic

Measuring material without stopping the production line has long been recognised as a cost-effective solution; however the process of such can prove tricky. Solartron's touch and non-contact probes can determine both the thickness and the surface finish.

Dynamic flatness measuring using Displacement S Series

Manufacturing companies undertaking the measurement of flatness for surface need to take precise readings for the smallest degree of change. The Orbit® 3 Network is able to take synchronised readings of several digital probes.

Paper and metals roller measurement

Ensuring the maintenance of rolling machines in paper and metals industries is paramount to ensuring the ouput material is of the correct standard. The Orbit® 3 measurement system supplies the roll grinder operator the data needed.

Plastic bag quality control using Digital Probes

The position and measurements of a zipper on a plastic bag needs to be taken in-process as the material is dispensed from a roll, prior to the cutting and heat sealing process. Measurements needed are height of the zipper whilst zipped and the gripper.

Thickness gauging of commercial product

With costs soaring and people becoming more environmentally aware, it is important for manufacturers of commercial products to try to reduce the amount of materials used where possible, achieved through thinner materials without compromising quality.

Measurement of moving materials

When measuring moving materials, systems need careful consideration before choosing the best product for the job. Linear forces through the flexure and no sliding components within the flexure help to ensure excellent performance and a very long life.

Aggregates and asphalts Testing

The concrete or aggregate tests involve small displacement under force applications. The behaviour of the sample is then analysed accurately and characterised.

Bearings

The high volumes of bearings produced within manufacturing environments calls for reliable and long-lasting sensors which can ensure the consistency of each bearing, whilst operating at high speeds and repeats.

Bearing measurement with Flexures and Block Gauges

Post process gauging or the grading of bearing components are among the most demanding of all post process gauging applications. Both Flexures and Block Gauges provide fast and reliable measurements in hard to reach places.

Automotive

As the complexity and precision of automotive parts become more demanding, the choice of sensor and the way that data is processed becomes more integral to the system and workstation design.

Alignment of camshaft bearings using Digital Miniature Probe fixture

Because they are quick, accurate, and cost effective, the Solartron Miniature Probe is frequently utilized in these types of bearing checks. It is small enough to be mounted to a bore gauge, and its double flexure design provides the ruggedness for the repeated up and down from being threaded through the mounts. Also, since the probes come pre-calibrated, they only need to be mounted and mastered before use, ensuring an easy setup on the factory floor.

Single Leaf Flexure for use in snap gauges for crankshafts

Solartron’s Single Leaf Flexure is for more abrasive applications, as well as jobs where standard pencil probes will not fit. It has been tested to over 20 million cycles, with extendable arms that can fit inside bores or other tough to reach places.

Wireless bore gauging for machine centres

Solartron’s WiGauge™ and WiGauge™ Gen II are built for bore and depth gauging applications where wired instruments are unfeasible or undesirable. A calibrated, digital 10 mm spring probe is encased in high impact ABS handle with an optional new integrated colour LCD screen.

Taking differential housing measurements using WiGauge™

Using one centralised WiGauge™ wireless solution for bore gauging on multi-machine cell projects, eliminates any redundancy that would occur by individually equipping each machine with its own independent ‘cabled’ system, ultimately dramatically reducing costs.

Cylinder head and cam shaft measurement using Flexures and Gauging Probes

With measurements being taken at 3 points per journal and cradle, both Gauging Probes and Flexures were used to achieve optimum results, with the diameter and centre point being calculated from these figures. In total, 12 Solartron sensors were used in the one fixture, communicating with one another using the Orbit® 3 Network, a fully formed digital measurement system.

Measurements of automotive parts

As technologies have progressed, car manufacturers have had to ensure the precision production of parts and casing to ensure the smooth running and ultimate performance they strive to achieve, whilst keeping production costs down.

Using 120 probes integrated using the Orbit® Network, the interior geometry of the two main cases of a transfer/differential system could be measured at one time in an off-gauge station.

Cars mechanical prototyping process

When the mechanical engineers
are designing a new chassis or a new security device for the automotive market, they base their analysis on existing theoretical schematics and structures behaviors.

The validation processes are very important to match the theory and the reality. In studying the movement structure in real situation, they definitively settle it.
